#04 HOW TO BE A DIRECTOR OR CINEMATOGRAPHER

Many people ask me what's the best way to become a Director or a Cinematographer, or a filmmaker in general. And when I tell them that I have 10 years of experience and I am still trying to find out the answer they look at me with a funny face. So I made this video, not to put you off but to open your eyes and make you think. There isn't a fast way really... there's possibly an easier way if someone on your family has connections or work in the industry, but you still need to spend some time learning the skill if you want to be successful. Some people work their way up (old school) starting as a runner, then stepping up to Clapper Loader, then Focus Puller, eventually Camera Operator and if you are good maybe you will become a DOP. Others go to film school, do a lot of shoots and make as many contacts as possible, in the hope that one of those contacts will become a Director that they can team up with. At the end of the day, there is no faster way to climb up the ladder... Just do it the way you feel more comfortable and never give up on your dreams. Eventually you will succeed. Good Luck!
